In 1950s Brooklyn, longshoremen jostle daily for business in a tightknit community bound by codes of justice and honour. Eddie Carbone’s fatherly protection for his orphaned niece soom becomes a ticking time bomb after he agrees to harbour two of his wife’s cousins, Italian immigrants desperate for work and a slice of the American Dream. Tensions mount as cultures collide and Eddie’s act of generosity spirals towards self-destruction.
Arthur Miller’s powerful tale of desire, betrayal and justice is one of the great classic plays of the 20th century and resonates with the same emotional impact today as when it was written. Miller is one of America’s finest playwrights whose other landmark works include The Crucible and Death of a Salesman (both popular Mercury productions).
