Idyllic setting for remnants of a defensible manor with a C15 sandstone gatehouse behind a waterway (probably a moat). Much restored from 1925 onwards. Held by the Courtenay family from C15 and the Carews C16, Bickleigh Castle played a key role in the union of two great Devon families. Damaged in the Civil War. Old Court House in the courtyard and thatched C12 (and later) chapel nearby. Mentioned in the Doomsday Book. Situated in the heart of the Devon countryside within a 30 acre estate, just minutes away from Junction 27 and Tiverton Parkway train station.
