Mercury declares first Colchester Buttonhole Day a success
20 Jul 2010
Volunteers and staff at the Mercury Theatre spent the day on Tuesday 20 July handing out hundreds of free floral buttonholes and posies in celebration of Colchester in Bloom.
The flowers which had been kindly donated by Marks & Spencer as well as from the gardens of members of staff and local hedgerows were made into a range of bespoke buttonholes between 10 am and 4pm. Mercury customers and shoppers passing the theatre were encouraged to make their own or take away one of those already made, with donations being made to next years Colchester in Bloom competition.
“It really makes you feel good to give somebody something…especially flowers….it brings a smile to people’s faces. Everybody from little girls wanting a small posy for their bedroom to elderly gents willing to wear a button hole were delighted to be part of Colchester in Bloom” said Rachel Thorne, Marketing Manager at the Mercury Theatre.
Grateful thanks, for helping make the Mercury Bloom, go to Pam & David Baveystock, Martin Ridsdale, Janice Fielden and Derek Rodgers who are all volunteers and Champions of the Mercury Theatre. They often give up their time to help stuff and stick envelopes for mailings, serve tea to actors and technicians during the tech week of a production (Tech Tea!) and generally help with events such as Colchester in Bloom Day.
