Coriolanus *2007*
by William Shakespeare

Director Tina Packer | Designer Sara Perks

Heroic general Caius Martius, recently crowned Coriolanus, cannot bring himself to beg for votes from a fickle public. A killing machine at war, he cannot ‘play’ so well at political spin. Fighting wars and married as a teenager, murdered by 30, the torrid and relentless story grapples with both the internal and external conflicts of Coriolanus, the Roman super-warrior.
Petulant and fatally influenced by his mother, the arrogant and headstrong Coriolanus battles between love, family, honour, duty and pride; should he follow his head or heart, be a soldier or a statesman?
Can he be the honourable leader that the people demand? The future of Rome depends on it…
Coriolanus is given the Mercury Theatre Company treatment with an all male cast and direction by world-renowned Shakespeare expert, Tina Packer (Artistic Director of Shakespeare & Company). Tina has dedicated her life to exploring Shakespeare’s work and has a reputation for fast-paced and gutsy productions that tell it like it is.
New York Times review of Shakespeare & Company’s production of Hamlet
“Invaluable… the first priority is to tell a cracking good story and ‘speak the speech’ so clearly and comprehendingly that even theatre-goers new to Shakespeare grasp the plot and characters.”
