Guests are enjoying a weekend in the country home of Robert and Freda Caplan when someone produces a musical cigarette-box that belonged to Robert’s dead brother. A question arises over whether one of the guests could ever have seen it before. Robert’s insistence on probing for the absolute truth uncovers a world of lies, theft and betrayal that threatens to destroy him. Just as he reaches breaking point a twist in time occurs and Priestley shows what might have happened if the characters had simply let the cigarette-box moment – the dangerous corner – pass.
