IPH... from the Greek Iphigeneia in Aulis by Euripides *2008*
by Colin Teevan
by Colin Teevan
Director Sue Lefton
|
Designer Adrian Linford
In this epic and ancient tale, Agamemnon, the leader of the Greek Army, a Father and a King, is faced with the most horrible moral dilemma. At the brink of war, the Gods, who have stopped all wind and stalled his fleets of ships, demand that he sacrifice his eldest daughter Iphigeneia. He prevaricates. Failure to comply will incite his soldiers to mutinous fury but how can such an action ever be justified or justifiable? Iphigeneia takes the choice out of his hands. But is she acting for the greater good or is it a noble suicide for an ignoble cause?
Colin Teevan’s powerful, contemporary and poetic adaptation of IPH… is stark, sensitive and uncompromising drama and will be the second Euripides play presented by the Mercury Theatre Company following the success of ION in 2004.
Mercury Associate Director Sue Lefton is in ever increasing demand to work internationally and so we are delighted that she has found time to return to Colchester. Previous productions here include The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Death of a Salesman, Our Country’s Good and Betrayal.
