A gleeful and incorrigible take on the dark joys of man’s inhumanity to man, The Lonesome West tells the story of the Connor brothers. They live in Leenane, a small town in Connemara 'the murder capital of the world,’ with an increasingly violent history.
They don't have much between them, just a small house and the tiny inheritance left by their father. They get joy from simple pleasures: drinking, joking, swiping food at funerals, and fighting with each other.
Especially fighting with each other…passionately…like maniacs… over the slightest thing… and to unimaginable extremes. Poor young Father Welsh’s attempts to reconcile the brothers results only in raising the stakes…
“Feckin’ hilarious” Leenane Chronicle
The Lonesome West was nominated for a Tony Award in 1999 prior to Martin McDonagh’s Six Shooter (Oscar & Academy Award 2006), The Beauty Queen of Leenane (RSC) and his new 2008 feature film In Bruges.
Continuing the Mercury’s commitment to creating exciting performance spaces (Miss Julie, Small Miracle), in this production the audience will be seated on the stage.
Winner 1996 Evening Standard Award and George Devine Award for Most Promising Playwright.
