In this session led by Assis Carreiro, developing your personal toolkit as a freelancer will be the focus. These include: how to build networks and guest lists to your activities; where to look for work; how to negotiate and read contracts and protect yourself; and how to better understand your rights and who to turn to for help when thing go wrong.

Assis Carreiro
A key figure in the international arts world, with a specialization in dance, Assis Carreiro is a senior cultural leader working for over three decades with organisations around the globe. Based in Ipswich, Suffolk, Assis represents represents choreographers and designers and provides mentoring and strategic consultancy to arts and cultural organisations around the globe. Current projects include Artistic Advisor to DanceEast’s Rural Retreats; mentoring for Mercury Creatives consultant to the Australia Council. She is a Trustee of Rambert School of Dance and Jubilee Hall in Aldeburgh. Assis has served as Artistic Director and Executive Director of DanceEast (UK) where she led the capital project for the creation of the Jerwood DanceHouse; Cultural Strategist, High Commission of Canada in the UK; Director of Culture, Quebec Delegation; Artistic Director of Royal Ballet Flanders; Programmer at DasTAT, Ballet Frankfurt; Artistic Director, DanceXchange. Assis was born in the Azores and raised in Canada and has lived in the UK since 1994. In 2014 Assis was awarded an MBE for her services to dance.
