Albatross
Albatross by Martha Loader
Albatross is a compelling new play from award-winning Martha Loader (Winner – 2025 George Devine Award and 2022 Bruntwood Prize) that takes us to the very boundaries of love and devotion in the age of climate catastrophe.
Alice returns from a gruelling Antarctic odyssey to her daughter Alba and her mother Eve. Everything has changed. There’s been a flood, a funeral, and a new romance. It’s 1.30am. Alba sleeps, while Eve has never been more awake. And Alice? Maybe those cracks she discovered in the Antarctic ice have followed her home…
Albatross encounters mighty questions of motherhood, the explorer’s soul and how to be a hero in today’s world. Strong characters, sharp humour and urgent story make for a unique clash of the epic and the domestic. Martha Loader’s riveting take on the family drama genre is about these intimate ties – do they make us act with more care or merely blind us to catastrophe?
