Mercury at Abbey Field

We regret to inform you that due to circumstances beyond our control, performances of Madagascar the Musical at Mercury at Abbey Field have now been cancelled. For more information, please refer to the statement below:

A letter from the Mercury Theatre and Selladoor Worldwide:

Over the last few weeks, the Mercury’s amazing tent has risen from the ground at Abbey Field. We are incredibly proud of our amazing team who have worked tirelessly to help make this happen. We anticipated there would be a few challenges and tricky moments on our journey to get everything ready for our Mercury at Abbey Field season, but we wouldn’t normally expect to have to share details of the problems we encounter with our audiences.

Unfortunately, during the fit-up for the tent it was discovered that the height above the stage is actually lower than the measurements provided on the tent plans. There have been a lot of knock-on effects that we have managed to solve, and we would like to assure our audiences that this will not affect the quality or production values of any of our other upcoming productions, however the one problem that we haven’t been able to overcome is the impact this has on Madagascar the Musical.

Ever since we discovered the problem we have been working with the show’s producer Selladoor Worldwide to try and find a solution. At the end of last week, their production team visited the tent and we all saw for ourselves that the change to the height would mean that many of Madagascar’s key set and puppetry elements would have to be removed. We agreed that this would mean Mercury at Abbey Field audiences wouldn’t get to see the show at the standard we would all want, and that you as our customers have the right to expect.

It is therefore, with great regret that the decision has been made to cancel the performances of Madagascar the Musical that had been due to take place in Colchester at the end of October.

We have taken the show off-sale so that tickets can’t be purchased and we will be starting the refund process immediately (including the cost of any Restoration Levy and parking vouchers purchased to attend the performance). We expect to have completed this process by Thursday 10 October.

Although these circumstances have been beyond the control of both the Mercury Theatre and Selladoor Worldwide, we would like to apologise profusely to our audiences for any inconvenience and disappointment caused.

The Mercury Theatre look forward to welcoming Selladoor Worldwide to our Mercury at Abbey Field venue with their production of Avenue Q this November, and we hope to continue to grow and strengthen our relationship with Selladoor once we are back in our newly refurbished theatre in 2020.

An entirely entertaining night for the whole family.
