Join us for a six week Musical Theatre writing course for beginners with Gus Gowland (Pieces of String), delivered online!

Always wanted to write a musical but didn’t know where to start?

Perhaps you’ve got some songs but you’re not sure how to develop them into a show?

Maybe you just love musicals and want to know more about how they’re made!

This six-week course explores the fundamentals of musical theatre, providing practical techniques to develop your writing and personal feedback and support to develop your ideas.

Each session will be a blend of traditional teaching, group work and individual writing tasks, designed to inspire, motivate and encourage creative thinking. There will be some exercises to complete between sessions, but they definitely won’t feel like homework!

Over the course of six weeks, you’ll develop your understanding of and skills in writing musical theatre, exploring vital components such as structure, plot, creating characters and song-setting across the following weeks:

  • Week 1, 13 Jul: ‘We start today’
  • Week 2, 20 Jul: ‘Words, words, words’
  • Week 3, 27 Jul: ‘Music of the night’
  • Week 4, 3 Aug: ‘Books’
  • Week 5, 10 Aug: ‘Putting it together’
  • Week 6, 17 Aug: ‘It’s not where you start, it’s where you finish’

Whether you’re aiming to hone your skills or discover new ones, this course will help you unlock your creative voice.

By looking at existing musicals to see how they did it – and using practical exercises to learn how you do it – this course will boost your confidence and reveal your potential in a safe, supportive and collaborative environment.
