In Hamelin the people are busy milling, baking, brewing and trading. The play begins in the market square with traders selling their wares and children dancing and singing. However, all is not well in Hamelin. Where there is grain, there are mice and rats! In response to the problem, the mayor introduces a secret weapon – cats! But the cats cannot cope! The Pied Piper arrives and agrees to rid the town of the problem, and the mayor promises him a generous payment plus his daughter’s hand in marriage. The Piper charms the rodents away and they perish in the river. But, on completion of the task, the mayor refuses to keep his promises. In a rage, the Piper charms away all the children.  Will Hamelin become a sad lonely place?

OLIVIA! A female Oliver!
Performed by Oxford House School pupils

This brilliant and innovative show, set in Victorian times, traces the steps of Olivia, from downtrodden orphan to star of the stage. On her journey to the bright lights of London, she is befriended by Eliza Doolittle from My Fair Lady. Eliza and the flower-sellers are joined by street urchins, orphans and “Poor School” children. There are also splendid cameos from favourite characters such as George Bernard Shaw, Ebenezer Scrooge, Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson.

This feel-good show, adapted for Oxford House School, abounds with Malcolm Sircom’s well-known wit and humour with songs that are catchy and lyrical.

Watch out for an outbreak of handkerchiefs in the final scene!
