We want to hear from you!

With theatre’s now preparing for reopening after a long lockdown hiatus, audiences are finally beginning to rekindle the magic of theatre. Over the last year, whilst theatres were closed, telling stories and sharing memories became an integral part of keeping the magic of theatre alive.

Theatre Stories is a digital platform that will collect and amplify stories of theatre goers throughout the UK who are rarely heard. By sharing tales with community members via social media, regional and national press, Theatre Stories are looking to transform the public perceptions on who theatre is for.

The team at the Mercury are thrilled to be partnering with Theatre Stories in this campaign and we share their vision that theatre should be accessible for all. Theatre Stories are partnering with six theatres across the country, all with strong community links and outreach; Theatre Royal Plymouth, Northern Stage, Theatre Clwyd and Derby Theatre, with support from The Space and Arts Council England.

The campaign began in 2020 as the threat of theatre job losses nationally became a reality due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Playwright and PR Laura Horton collected more than 75 stories of how a venue had changed people lives, and shared them online and in local national press, which shone a spotlight during the theatre’s toughest time. The stories collecting resonated so much that Horton welcomed producer Lizzie Volger onto the project to maximise it’s growing potential.

The project is continuing to grow and collate stories throughout the UK. As we are gearing up to the reopening of our theatre we are still very keen to offer the opportunity for you to share your story.
Through the success of our recent Mercury Voices archiving project, we can take this opportunity to establish public voices by sharing your memories of coming to the theatre.
