Today, the Mercury Theatre, Colchester announces its participation in the Arts for Impact campaign with Big Give and is calling for donations to help raise vital funds. The campaign will enable the theatre to expand accessible opportunities to take part in the Mercury Young Company (MYC) group for young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
From 17–24 March only, every donation made via the Big Give online platform will be doubled. For every £1 donated, the Mercury Theatre will receive £2 – meaning supporters can have twice the impact.
The Mercury Theatre is dedicated to widening access to theatre and using the arts to transform young lives. Its Mercury Young Company (MYC), a year-round ensemble, nurtures the next generation of theatre-makers and provides opportunities for those who may otherwise see the stage as out of reach.
MYC works to break down barriers to creative spaces, giving young people access to the joy of self-expression and the chance to grow in confidence and shine.
Through the Big Give Arts for Impact campaign, the Mercury Theatre will raise funds to deliver dedicated MYC SEND clubs, led by trained practitioners who tailor activities to meet each young person’s individual needs. These inclusive sessions provide a safe and supportive environment where young people can build confidence, develop communication and social skills, and experience the transformative power of collaborative theatre-making.
The campaign aims to raise £5,000 in donations, which, with match funding, will unlock a total of £10,000. These funds will directly support accessible workshops, specialist facilitation, and resources to ensure that young people with SEND can fully participate in creative life at the Mercury.
Steve Mannix, Chief Executive of the Mercury Theatre, said:
“Theatre has the power to transform confidence, communication and self-belief. Every young person deserves the opportunity to express themselves creatively and feel part of something bigger. Through the Big Give campaign, we can break down barriers and ensure our Mercury Young Company is accessible to every young person. With match funding doubling every donation, now is the moment for our community to come together and make a lasting difference.”
The Mercury Theatre believes that every young person deserves to feel included, inspired, and celebrated. By supporting the Mercury’s Big Give campaign, donors can help make creative opportunities accessible for all.
