Forthright, intrepid and engaging, Ann Widdecombe, the former Shadow Home Secretary, has reinvented herself since leaving Parliament. Her inimitable performances on Strictly Come Dancing and now in the Big Brother house have made her a popular and familiar face on stage and TV. Theatres and festivals absolutely love hearing her talk about her life, which still involves serious debate and regular TV documentaries.
She has fronted her own series, Ann Widdecombe to the Rescue, acting as an agony aunt, and also served as question master on the Sky quiz show, Cleverdicks. Known for her firm views on many controversial topics and her religious beliefs, she has also presented documentaries and was the subject of a Louis Theroux profile.
How often can you hear a former Shadow Home Secretary revealing what life is really like at the centre (well OK, right of centre) of British politics? She had a formidable reputation in Parliament and remains relentlessly outspoken.
“I always get plenty of questions about Strictly, my books and an awful lot of questions about Europe too, but that is part of the fun of it. The whole thing is off the cuff. It’s my life. It’s what I have been involved in. People also want to know what I’ve done since retirement.”
Live on stage, Ann is engaging, entertaining and refreshingly down to earth. An unmissable evening, which definitely has ‘something of the night’ about it.
