What really happens before day one of rehearsals?
How do directors shape an idea, build a creative world, and walk into the room with clarity, confidence, and a plan?

In this practical masterclass, acclaimed Essex director and playwright Michelle Payne lifts the lid on the part of directing that no one ever explains. From shaping your concept to working with designers, navigating early conversations with producers, and planning your rehearsal process, Michelle will guide you through the essential tools that set a production up for success.

Whether you’re directing your first project or refining your professional practice, this session will help you approach rehearsals with structure, imagination, and confidence.

Michelle Payne

Michelle is a director and published playwright from Essex. She is currently associate director on the Nottingham Playhouse revival, UK Tour and Asia transfer of Dear Evan Hansen.

Michelle was short-listed as one of eight directors for RTST Sir Peter Hall Director Award 2022 and for the Young Vic Genesis Future Director Award 2023 and long-listed for the RTST Sir Peter Hall Director Award 2023 and in 2024.   In 2021 Michelle worked on artist-led programme Future Forms with the Donmar Warehouse under the guidance of director Sacha Wares.   Michelle was a 2019 recipient of the Regional Theatre Young Directors’ Scheme completing a three month residency at the Mercury Theatre Colchester.​
