Show Bio

From 10am-3pm on Sun 10 Jan. join our Mercury Creatives Masterclass: Sound Design Hands On with Nicola T Chang

Build a sound world from scratch and learn how to make a story sing.

Join sound designer and composer Nicola T. Chang (For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When the Hue Gets Too Heavy, The Ministry of Lesbian Affairs, The Swell, A Playlist for the Revolution, Sound of the Underground, My Neighbour Totoro) for a hands-on Masterclass where you will explore various sound design techniques and build your own sound design.

We’ll unpack how to approach a script, develop a show’s sonic identity, and make creative choices that support rhythm, mood, and dramaturgy. The session will also delve into designing for different spaces and scales, the evolving relationship between sound and narrative, and how sound interacts with other design elements to shape the overall world of a production.

This masterclass is ideal for early-career theatre-makers and sound designers keen to explore a sound design process in a condensed, practical way. There will be time at the end for a Q&A with Nicola.
