Working with Schools

Bringing theatre to life in schools

The generosity of our audiences, supporters and funders enables us to deliver work that is exciting, thought-provoking and enriches the lives of children and young people across schools in Essex.

Collaborating closely with teachers, our creative engagement programs are designed to embed creative learning throughout the term. Alongside drama and literacy skills, pupils develop their communication, co-operation and confidence, supporting their wider learning.

John Bunyan School in Braintree were delighted with the pupil progress following our Literacy Through Drama workshops.

Workshops such as these offer a unique opportunity to bring literature to life in an exciting and creative way, through a series of inventive workshops led by a Mercury teaching artist once a week and John Bunyan has seen great results and some incredible responses in the children.

The class have gained so much confidence with the Mercury Theatre and have enjoyed it immensely. The children’s learning has improved thinking about settings and characters.”

“The children have enjoyed progressing each week, developing the stories and adapting to new ideas. The warm up exercises help the children focus. The sessions have enabled the children to be more imaginative in their story writing in class.”

“The children have enjoyed the Mercury Theatre sessions and have applied the knowledge gained to their story writing in class. The have used more imaginative ideas and expanded their description of characters and settings. One child was much more confident in talking and said he felt ‘great!’”
