Celebrating Books and Inspiring a Love of Reading

Every March, over 100 countries celebrate “World Book Day”. This event aims to encourage reading for pleasure and increase literacy amongst children.

If your school or youth group is planning ahead and looking for ways to celebrate books and encourage reading, why not partner with the Mercury Theatre for one of our workshops, projects or after school clubs? With 5% off any literature themed workshop for pupils booked for March, there’s no better time!

For pre-schools and early years, we have our Fairy Godmother Story Time. This magical session can be tailored to the topic or story of your choice and includes stories, songs and games. Alternatively, our Puppet Story Sessions include cute characters and craft time to engage with the book/theme of your choice.

Last month we debuted our new Anansi the Spider Creative Writing sessions, encouraging young people to write their own stories. This is a great way for Primary students to learn about story structure, and express their creativity.

Our Literacy Through Drama sessions can be adapted for any age and offer a unique opportunity to bring literature to life for your English students in an exciting and creative way. Students use drama techniques to explore a text of your choice, and develop their communication, co-operation and confidence as well as their understanding of the text. This is available as a one-off session, or 6 or 12 week projects.

We love Shakespeare at the Mercury, and we have a range of options for educators looking to engage their students with the works of the Bard. Our Shakespeare workshops can be tailored to any of his plays. On Tue 12 March, we are hosting two performances of “One Man Macbeth” in our studio theatre. Tickets can be booked for £125+VAT per class of up to 30. Additionally, on Fri 16 February we are hosting a CPD event for teachers called “Getting to Grips with Shakespeare”. This session is an introduction to Secondary teachers on how to unleash the imagination and world of Shakespeare’s famous plays. Through Shakespearean rehearsal techniques, teachers will be armed with a fun and engaging series of exercises to deliver within their own school. Places can be booked for £30+VAT, with 20% discount for Teachers’ Network members.
