Mercury Youth Theatre – Rags to Riches – 22 Jan 2017

On Sun 22 Jan, we welcomed all of our Mercury Theatre Youth Theatres to the main stage for a spectacular night of theatre. Rags to Riches was the stimulus and the title all of the groups had been given to work with, inspired by this year’s pantomime, Dick Whittington.

There were six groups performing on the day, with the 5-7s performing transition pieces about the untold story of toys with the support of the Youth Theatre Assistants and Academy East Music School.

The older groups had approached the stimulus from so many different angles; 8-10s had built an environmentally friendly vehicle to help save the world, 11-13s focused on the refugee crisis and 16-18s took us to a dangerous dance-‘til-you-drop competition in 1930s America.

It was admirable to see this collective of young people choosing to explore topical and sensitive issues with great care, imagination and confidence. A full auditorium of friends and family enjoyed the show, and provided plenty of applause to support this fantastic evening of work.

Have a look at the video we took of the Youth Theatre members not long before they took to the stage!
