Evelyn

Written by Tom Ratcliffe

There are a few things that we know about Evelyn: we know what she did, we know that we hate her, and we know that she’s still out there. Somewhere. She’s just not Evelyn anymore. She could be anyone. Even you.
Britain is on the hunt, it has been for years. Walton is on high alert…and Sandra’s just arrived.

Inspired by real-life events, Evelyn is a story of mob justice in modern day Britain that interrogates the question: when is justice really served?

Afghanistan. It’s 2004. Farook and Samia broadcast live every day to the whole of Kabul, delivering ninety minutes of musical bliss: Britney, Backstreet Boys and Enrique Iglesias. Inspired by the true story of Afghanistan’s first youth music programme, Kabul Goes Pop: Music Television Afghanistan explores a world following the US invasion that is complex, contradictory and shocking – all to a soundtrack of early noughties’ pop.

When The Long Trick’s Over

Written by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm

Two sisters. One dream. The hardest open-water swim in the world.

This triumphant play from Olivier Award-winning writer Morgan Lloyd Malcolm moves forwards and backwards in time across the twenty-one miles between Dover and Calais as a young swimmer harnesses her mind and body to make the crossing.

Tackling what it means to grieve, both physically and mentally, When The Long Trick’s Over encapsulates the fact that love persists whatever the distance and however perilous the journey is to the other side. And that, sometimes, it means swimming against the tide and against the things that hold you back: the old memories and oil tankers, jellyfish and Jelly Babies.

Jumbo (Book)

Water is essential to life, yet a few generations ago obtaining a bucket or two of the precious liquid was a daily struggle for most people.

A near universal water supply to British towns and cities was made possible by the development of steam power, cast iron pipes and high level water storage in the form of reservoirs or water towers.

In Colchester, this involved the construction of the second largest water tower in England. Yet the project was mired in bitter controversy even before it began…

Contemporary Crafts

Unique crafts in our shop!

Mercury Theatre launched our Contemporary Craft Callout in 2022, where we were seeking local artists to partner with to provide a collection of beautiful, bespoke, handmade items to be sold in our Shop, that not only reflects their artistic vision, but are also sustainable, ethically-made, and unique. It has been such a success that we have continued to do regular callouts.

Come along to the theatre and explore the full range of Contemporary Crafts by local makers in our Box Office displays – you might just find the perfect gift!

If you think you have something special that would fit in with our theatre, we open applications for our Spring season (Apr-Oct) and our Festive Season (Nov-Apr) displays. Find out more about how to apply via our Contemporary Craft Callout page.
